Dealing with depression

Text: 1 Kings 19: 7-8: The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.

The Lord commanded him: “Go out and appear before me on the mountain because I am about to pass by. (…)

There are challenging stages in life and in some of them, there seems to be no way out or hope. That happens to all of us at some point. Anyone who has passed or faced something like this in life knows what it is like to be under such enormous pressure that a considerable gloom in the soul feels. Yes, depression can also knock at our door. When that happens, we have two possible exits to choose from: run away or face it.

The prophet Elijah went through severe depression and his initial intention was to try to give up. But God showed him that he still had a great journey ahead: he needed to continue! Elijah obeyed recognized that the Lord was present and sustained him. With all certainty, he could trust and depend on his God. It’s the same with you! Get up and seek the presence of God. Believe that with Christ, you will manage to deal with every situation that afflicts you.

Dealing with your depression in the presence of the Lord:

  • Believe that God is present! – Ask for the help of the Holy Spirit to face and overcome this depressive phase.
  • Conquer your Emotions by faith – Even if you don’t “feel” well, fight depression by activating your faith in Christ.
  • Search (read and hear) the Word of God – Get away from the self-help books. What you need is the help that comes from above.
  • Pray, cry, and pray a little more – Smash before God with tears and prayers. He wants to hear and encourage you!
  • Seek true joy – Fill your heart with psalms and praise! Connect the sound, sing, praise, and dance for God.
  • Share your problem with a mature person in the faith and ask him to help you in prayer.
  • Be grateful! Look around, and thank God for what He has already done in your life.
  • If necessary, seek medical help or a specialist – There are chronic cases of depression in which the help of a psychiatrist or therapist will be significant. Many Christian psychologists can help you in this phase.
  • Remember that depression is a phase. Have courage! Christ overcame the world, and by faith, you will also overcome.
  • Remember that in dealing with depression, your attention should be focused on God alone and the faithfulness of His word.

Prayer:

Lord, help me to face this moment of depression with courage and confidence in You. Grant me faith to move forward on this day even if there are tears, but with hope and renewed strength. Amid this storm, help me to depend more on You and believe that You are present with me at all times, amen.
