Can wearing mask to protect your from coronavirus?

There are different kinds of masks in the market now. However, not all are recommended to avoid contagion. The Ministry of Health recommends that, if you want to use a mask,  use the model FFP2 (N-95), a product that has also been endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Is it useful to wear a mask to protect yourself from contagion?

People without respiratory symptoms should not wear a mask. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the use of masks for people who have signs compatible with COVID-19 and those who care for people with symptoms such as fever or cough. The use of masks is crucial for healthcare personnel and caregivers of others (both at home and in the healthcare facility).

Should I be concerned about COVID-19?

If you do not find an area where COVID-19 is spreading, you have not traveled from any of those areas, and you have not been in close contact with someone who has done so and feels bad, your chances of contracting it are currently low. However, it is understandable that the situation causes you stress and anxiety. It is a good idea to report the facts so that you can accurately determine your risks and take reasonable precautions. You can get accurate information about COVID-19 and its presence in your area through your health care provider, national public health authorities, and your employer.

If you have traveled in the recent time to an area where an outbreak of COVID-19 has occurred, you stand the risk of infection very seriously. Follow the advice of national and local health authorities. Although COVID-19 only causes mild illness in most cases, it can cause severe disease in some people. More rarely, the disease can be fatal. Aged people and those with pre-existing medical conditions (such as high blood pressure, heart problems, or diabetes) appear to be more vulnerable. (See Protective Measures for people who are in areas where COVID-19 is spreading or who have recently visited them (in the last 14 days)).

How can we contact COVID-19?

The risk of contacting coronavirus depends on where you live or where you have recently traveled.  For people living in countries like China, the USA, Italy, UK… the risk of contracting COVID-19 is very high.

General care to avoid getting the virus?

General individual protection measures to prevent COVID-19 are the same as to prevent the flu, and include:

  • Perform frequent hand hygiene (washing with soap and water or alcohol-based solutions), especially after contact with respiratory secretions.
  • Maintain a minimum distance of two meters from people with symptoms of acute respiratory infection.
  • In case of cough or sneeze, cover the mouth and nose with the front part of the elbow or with disposable tissues that we will later throw away.
  • Avoid sharing food or utensils (cutlery, glasses, napkins, handkerchiefs …) and other objects without cleaning them properly.
  • Avoid touching your nose, eyes, and mouth.

How long do symptoms take to appear?

According to the most recent data, symptoms can take between 2 and 14 days to appear, although they usually take 5 to 6 days.

Is it possible to get COVID-19 from a person with the disease having contact with the feces?

The risk of COVID-19 contracting from contact with an infected person’s feces seems low. While initial research suggests that in some cases, the virus may be present in feces, spreading through this route is not one of the characteristic features of the outbreak—the WHO is embarking on diverse research to identify how COVID-19 is spreading. You can visit their website for regular updates on the new findings. It is a risk, however, and therefore is another reason to frequently wash your hands after using the bathroom and before eating.

The primary way of spreading the disease is through the respiratory droplets expelled by someone when coughing. The risk of getting COVID-19 from someone with no symptoms is very low. However, many people who get COVID-19 have only mild symptoms. This is particularly true in the early stages of the disease. Therefore, it is possible to get it from someone who, for example, only has a mild cough and does not feel sick. WHO is reviewing ongoing investigations into the transmission period of COVID-19 and will continue to report on the updated results.
