The Seven Deadly Sins

  1. Pride

Pride is the attribute or state of being proud or when one is full of him/ herself, i.e., having high an opinion of oneself. God himself hates pride (james4v6). God opposes the proud. The devil, because of pride, was sent down from heaven to the world. He wants to exalt himself above God so that people can begin to worship him in place of God.

Another notable example of the pride in the Bible is King Belshazzar in Daniel 5. This king diverted the glory that belongs to God to himself, and because God is so jealous about His glory, He didn’t spare him but struck him dead.

Pride brings people down, no matter how great such may be. There is a saying that it easy to come down than to go up.

The sin of pride is the agent of decrease that mostly reduces great men to nothing and kills their spiritual life and if not curbed, eventually leads to their physical death.

2. Unforgiveness

Unforgiveness means an unpardoned error or misdeed along with a desire to revenge or nurturing a negative feeling within you. In the book of Eph4v31-32, mark11v25, these bible verse explains that if we forgive, get rid of our bitterness toward others, God will also forgive us.  In other words, when we choose not to forgive others of their wrong deeds towards us, we are also not entitled to God’s forgiveness.

When Jesus was teaching his disciples how to pray, He says Our Father forgive our sins as we forgive others that trespass against us. The point reveals how deadly the sin of unforgiveness is before God.

Unforgiveness can be viewed in two ways;

  1. To ourselves: the feeling of regrets about our past, which gives way to lows self-esteem. There is a saying that others place value on you based on the value you place on yourself, and people see you the way you see yourself. When this happens, it leads to depression or even death.  Therefore, it is imperative that we need to forgive ourselves and let go the past. Read 2cor5v17.
  2. To others: The continuous bitterness within you when others offend you, this usually occurs when you see the fellow, your mood changes, you feel unhappy, and sadness set in place of joy. The word of God says the joy of the Lord is our strength, but instead of the joy of the Lord strengthen you, your unforgiveness makes you weak and depressed, which can lead to death if care is not carefully attended to on time.

3. Blasphemy Against The Holy Spirit

Blasphemy against the spirit of God is cursing Jesus and saying, “I don’t care what He did on the cross, saying who cares how precious is the blood of Christ” or hardening your heart to the call of the holy spirit willfully.  matt12v24-32, mark3v29, luke12v10.

When I was small, I thought blasphemy against the spirit of God is when the spirit instructs you to do something, and you refuse to follow its instructions, but by the help of God, I come to understand that it is beyond that. Blaspheme against the holy spirit is hardening your heart to repent from a particular sin He has revealed to you. This sin becomes so deadly because, once a person misses his opportunity to repent and turn to Christ while still alive, such is doomed forever.  Therefore, when we are doing something, and the holy spirit calls our attention to it that it is wrong, we should submit ourselves and go back to God with a broken heart and repent before its too late, Pharaoh king of Egypt is an example Exo14v28.

Blaspheme against the holy spirit causes both physical and spiritual death.

4. Disobedience

Another deadly sin that has wrecked the ship of so many people’s lives across the ages is disobedient.

Disobedience simply means refusal to obey or do according to instruction giving to us by God or His ordained source. Adam and Eve  in Gen5v19 disobeyed God, and they die spiritual, and not only that, they equally suffered the physical consequence of their deed. Up to date, humanity is still suffering from this consequences of their sin, except those that accept the salvation of Christ Rom5v19.

Another man who died due to disobedience to God command is the prophet in 1kings13v26. Disobedience brings about rejection from God, which eventually leads to both physical and spiritual death.

Disobedient entice God’s rejection upon man, and when a man gets to this point, his life becomes a prey to the enemies.

5. Envy

Envy is the burning desire to have an item somebody else has. This spirit never thinks of the good of others, but rather always desire to have everything the others has to himself.

Other people’s progress always threatens an envious person, and as such, leaves their lives in perpetual bitterness, which in no time graduate into depression, and suicidal.

The book of Proverbs 14:30, open   our   understanding to how deadly the sin of envy is ” Proverbs 14:30, “A sound heart is life to the body, But envy is rottenness to the bones.” Other biblical verses that address envy include: Job 5:2, Psalm 37:1, Proverbs 24:19-20, Ecclesiastes 4:4, Galatians 5:26, and James 3:14-16.

Kindness is a potent antidote to envy by putting the urge to support someone above the need to be above them.

6. Glutton

Glutton means given oneself to excessive eating or drinking. Oh, how many people have met with their death because of this particular sin.

Many people, when they have access to free food or drinks, they will eat as if the end of the world, has come. Many become excessively drunk that they ran into a moving vehicle that ended their lives.

Eaten and drinking become sinful, when it is overdone.

7. Lust

Last but not the least on our list of 7 deadly sins is lust. Lust is a burning passion for the opposite sex.

Upon the altar of sex has many lives and destinies buried. Can you imagine the number of people that have died of sexual related issue? It all starts with lusty thought, which eventually landed their lives into a problem they never envisaged.
